Friday Fact:

The word Friday comes from the Old English frigedæg, meaning the day of Frige the Anglo-Saxon form of Frigg, a West Germanic translation of Latin dies Veneris, "day (of the planet) Venus." However, in most Germanic languages the day is named after freyja —such as Frīatag in Old High German, Freitag in Modern German, Freyjudagr in Old Norse, Vrijdag in Dutch, Fredag in Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish—but Freyja and Frigg are frequently identified with each other.

IDC Samplers

Independent Distribution Collective New Music Samplers

Independent Distribution Collective is what the name implies -- a music distribution association for independent musicians and labels. They produce these samplers of the artists they distribute on a near-monthly basis to buyers for both retail and online stores worldwide. The earlier samplers were quarterly, but as IDC's business has grown and their service has expanded, so has their need to put these out more often. Which is fine by me, because they're a lot of fun to create. I turn them around quickly, usually in 1-2 days, so it's almost like a design challenge every month.

Most were produced in standard jewel case formats, with clear tray inserts so that artwork is visible underneath the CD itself. They were printed in small batches at quick-printers; sometimes digital, sometimes traditional. The CDs were also printed with a mix of thermal, silk-screen, dye-sub, and inkjet. It's all about cheap and quick...

Leaving Dakota

Twenty-Five Images by Kyle Cassidy
Saturday, June 18, 2011, 6–10pm

Photographer and Culturalist Kyle Cassidy's traveling art show "Leaving Dakota" comes to Oakland for one night only.

A collection of twenty-five 4x6 prints reveal the story of a mysterious woman, the dark figures that surround her, and the strange circumstances in which she finds herself. With one catch—there is no pre-set sequence, no titles to reveal secrets. The narrative is left entirely to the viewer's imagination.

The photos, taken with a Leica Digilux, are packed into an envelope and relayed around the world to any willing host, creating a chain of experiences that travel with the photos; the display environment and order of photos is entirely the host's choice. Kyle only asks that before the journey commences to the next proprietor that an image be added to the maelstrom, extending the story with each stop, so that the showing itself becomes part of the show and there's always a surprise for the next recipient. Beautiful.

ELEMENTAL:

The deteriorate art of Nathan Woody
Downtown L.A. Artwalk July 9th, 2009

Nathan Woody has buried photographs in the earth, hung them on fence posts for extended periods of time, exposed photos to insect colonies, partially submerged prints in water, rotting food, mold, and otherwise has given space and time for the elements to create lasting change to his art.

The influence of earth, air, fire, water, and organic matter effectively takes control of the piece, takes it out of the artist's hands, but Woody, as the artist, embraces and welcomes this process Exposure to the elements renders each piece completely unique and irreplaceable. ELEMENTAL is the culmination of thirteen years of exploration, experimentation, and the recognition that the elements ultimately shape us as we move throughout our lives.
